recently i took my truck into a pretty deep hole full of water. water was coming up over the hood, and i was in that hole for about 2-3 seconds, and got out. I consider myself lucky that my truck made it through still running after the engine was completely under water(espically if it was coming over the hood with my 3 in body lift!) but man it felt awesome to be able to make it through that!!!

i was wondering what i could add to my truck to make it more underwater friendly(lol) (like would i have to convert to carb from efi, and add a snorkel kit) because i know it would screw something up if i stayed in there too long!

i have a 97 z71 350

You could hydrolock the motor if you get water in the intake. I wouldnt remove the Vortech stuff if I were you. You can use your settup in conjunction with a snorkel and silicone in the right key places, and you will be good to go. Its never a good idea to intentionally fully submerge your motor anyhow, no matter how water proof you made it. Hydrolocking your motor is really really bad, and usually requires a full rebuild. You will be sorely dissapointed by a carburator if you have a Vortech settup.

I seoncd that! Don't switch away from the Vortec fuel injection... ever! It's a great fuel delivery system that is very, very reliable.

I've hydrolocked 3 motors in my time and the second it happens, you'll know (the motor dies immediately). I was luck all three times though. All I did was get a tow out of the water, take all of the spark plugs out, and then crank the motor for several minutes to blow all of the water out. Spark plugs back in, I was on my way home to do a complete oil change... twice.

The two big things to look out for when sealing up your motor is the air inlet and the distributor. The computer is located inside your truck, so you should be fine there.

P.S. it is a bit of a rush making it through ridiculously deep water, I have to agree.

P.S.S. There's another added benefit to having a snorkel too. When driving down dusty roads, you can turn the air inlet to point backwards, and your engine / air filter won't suck in a bunch of dusty/dirty air.

yeah.i understand it's not a good idea to fully submerge your engine in the water, i just didn't check the water depth before i decided to go though it.lol. lesson learned, fortunately, not the hard way!

so fuse boxes, alternator, battery, all that stuff should be fine to be underwater for a little while? is it not likely that something will short out?

The battery is (should be) sealed, so that should be fine. Although, the battery's terminals will conduct electricity and short-out the battery when submerged. So, after a while, the battery will at best, die... at worst, it could explode.

The alternator, depending upon the make, could end up with some problems, but they drain very well. So a few seconds underwater usually won't hurt them (their bearings are typically sealed).

The fuse box is another story (I forgot that that was under the hood in the newer chevy trucks). To seal this up, you could use some weatherstipping on the inside edge of the cover to help seal it up.

I've had my fuse block completely under water before for several minutes with no adverse effects, but it's not something I recommend.

Our pleasure... also, don't forget, that when you go deep water fording, it's always a good idea to drain the axles and re-fill them with frash oil. When an axle gets warms from driving around all day, and then dunks into cool/cold water, a vaccum is created and some water gets "sucked" in through the seals.

Same thing for transmission and transfer case too.

As a matter of fact, that is a good point Webby, and it brings us to another couple sealing ideas. There will be vent hoses on the top of your axles, its a good idea to extend those up into the cab or somewhere above the bottom of your rig. Its easy, just some hose. Also, check for a vent on your transmission and or tcase, if there is one, extend it up again with hose. Then be sure to seal everything else up.
