My '95 YJ shakes pretty hard when I'm taking off in 1st or reverse. The shake is intermittent and only seems to rear its ugly head when everything's had time to warm up. Usually, I will notice that I have trouble finding reverse right before the problem starts. It will do it a few times (taking off from three or four stop lights) and then it goes away. Shifting to second stops the problem immediately when taking off in 1st. Possibly related: this jeep has always been hard to get into first. I have a 4 cyl, manual tranny, 6" lift and 33" mudders. I just had the rear driveshaft rebuilt and rebalanced (it feels tight and I know the u-joints are good). I guess it could be the clutch. Any help would be great. Thanks.

It sounds like you may either have a clutch issue or an issue with your (Webby chime in on this) synchro in your tranny. It couldnt be the driveshaft or tires if it is only in 1st and rev that you have the issue. The motor wouldnt do that, and it really tips me off since you have a hard time putting the tranny in rev. I would start with checking the fluid level, then move on to bleeding the clutch line, then replace the clutch, (if you open it up and find the clutch to be in good shape, then dont bother buying a new one) then move on to opening up the tranny. I believe you will find your problem in the clutch or tranny itself.

Thanks for the feedback. You've pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I'll check/change the fluid first and try bleeding the clutch line. I'm leaning towards a bad clutch disc, though. Sure hope it's not the synchro(s).

i have a 93 wrangle with the same set up as far as the drivetrain and i have noticed taht first and reverse are just hard to get into i think that is the nature of the tranny....but i doubt its the syncros because it is shakin when takin off and not when you are puttin it in gear....make sure that the tranny and tcase are bolted up tight that can cause some play in the drivetrain and more noticable at low speeds

Thanks jeepy. I've been thinking I should get under there and torque everything to spec. Another one for the "to do" list. I have noticed that the rubber mounts between the tranny and the skid plate are ready to be replaced, too. I'm glad to hear that someone else has trouble shifting to first. If I had lifted this jeep, I think I would have stopped at 4", but that's just me.
